The first step in the roof installation process is a thorough inspection by a qualified roofing contractor.
Before we install a single shingle, we assess your roof deck, measure roof dimensions, identify any structural issues, and plan for proper ventilation with roof vents.
Here’s what makes our installation process different:
1. Complete Tear-Off When Needed
A tear-off (complete removal of the old roof) is often recommended for a longer-lasting and more secure roof installation process. We strip away old shingles, underlayment, damaged drip edge, and worn metal flashing down to the roof deck. This reveals hidden problems before they become leaks.
Many homeowners discover rotted wood, missing shingles, or water infiltration damage during tear-off that would have caused serious problems if left hidden under new shingles. While some contractors push overlay installations to save money, we recommend what’s right for your home—not what’s fastest.
2. Roof Deck Inspection & Repair
The roof deck must be inspected for damage and repaired if necessary before installing underlayment. We check every inch of your roof surface for soft spots, rot, or warped boards. Any damaged sections get replaced with new wood properly fastened to your roof structure.
This step is critical. Even premium architectural shingles won’t perform correctly on a compromised deck. We’ve seen too many roof replacement projects fail early because contractors skipped this fundamental step.
3. Ice and Water Shield Protection
We install ice and water shield along eaves, valleys, and around roof penetrations where leaks most commonly start. This waterproof underlayment creates a secondary barrier that prevents water infiltration even if wind-driven rain gets under shingles.

We install drip edge along the rake edge and bottom edge of your roof before shingle installation begins. This directs water away from fascia boards and prevents rot. Metal flashing goes around chimneys, skylights, and other roof penetrations to prevent leaks.

6. Starter Shingles & First Course
Starter shingles create a critical base for your first course of full shingles. We install starter strip along the lower edge and rake edge, ensuring the adhesive strip seals properly to prevent wind uplift.
The first shingle and first course set the pattern for your entire roof. We snap chalk lines to maintain straight rows, check alignment constantly, and ensure proper shingle placement from the start. Beginning the first course correctly determines whether your roof looks professionally installed or DIY.
7. Shingle Installation Course by Course
Working from the bottom edge upward toward the roof’s peak, our roofing crew installs each shingle course with precision. We follow the prevailing wind direction in your area to optimize shingle performance and prevent wind-driven rain infiltration.
Each architectural shingle gets properly fastened with roofing nails placed according to manufacturer’s specifications. We use the correct number of nails, position nail heads in the designated nailing zone, and ensure every fastener penetrates the roof deck—not just underlayment.
Standard shingles require four nails each, but high-wind areas may need six. We know which roofing components need extra fasteners based on your home’s location and roof pitch.
8. Valley & Hip and Ridge Installation
Closed valleys require careful shingle placement to create watertight channels. We weave or cut shingles along the valley centerline, seal all edges, and ensure proper water flow without creating damming spots.
Hip and ridge caps require special attention. We install ridge cap shingles along all hips and ridges, using cap nails driven at the proper angle. These hip and ridge caps must seal correctly while allowing for thermal expansion and contraction.
9. Final Inspection & Quality Check
We conduct a final inspection after the roofing job is complete to check for any issues. This includes:
Verifying all nail heads are flush and properly placed
Checking every roof penetration is sealed correctly
Ensuring proper shingle course alignment across the entire roof
Confirming drip edge is secure along every edge of the roof
