County Roofing Systems' Owens Corning Duration Designer Installation Process
A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
Here are the seven essential components of a durable, long-lasting roof installation.
1. Roof Decking
Also known as sheathing, this foundational layer is typically made of plywood or OSB (Oriented Strand Board). It provides a base for the rest of the roofing materials and must be inspected and repaired if damaged before any new installation can begin.
2. Underlayment
This layer is installed directly on top of the roof decking to provide an additional barrier against moisture. It can be made from felt or synthetic materials and helps protect the decking from rain and other elements.
3. Leak Barrier
This is a self-adhering membrane that is applied to areas prone to water penetration, such as eaves, valleys, and around chimneys and skylights. It serves as an extra layer of protection against leaks caused by wind-driven rain and ice dams.
4. Starter Strips
These are installed along the eaves and rakes of the roof to provide a secure base for the first row of shingles. Starter strips help prevent shingle blow-offs and ensure a straight edge for the shingle installation.
5. Shingles
The most visible part of the roofing system, shingles are installed in overlapping layers to protect against water and weather. Asphalt shingles are the most common due to their affordability, durability, and ease of installation.
6. Flashing
Metal flashing is used around roof penetrations (like chimneys, vents, and skylights) and in valleys to prevent water from seeping into the roof structure. Properly installed flashing is crucial for preventing leaks in these vulnerable areas.
7. Ridge Vents
These are installed at the peak of the roof to allow warm, moist air to escape from the attic, which helps regulate temperature and moisture levels inside the home. Proper attic ventilation is essential for the longevity of the roofing system and the overall comfort of the home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Owens Corning Duration Designer Shingles
What is the life expectancy of Owens Corning Duration Designer shingles?
Owens Corning Duration shingle installations typically last between 25 to 50 years. The actual lifespan of your roof can vary depending on several factors, including:
- Weather: Even the best roof installation may be damaged by a serious hurricane or a storm that knocks a tree onto your home. Damage accumulates with every bad weather event, so roof inspections after a storm are a good idea.
- Maintenance: Taking care of minor roof issues immediately can save you in the long term. Left neglected, small leaks can lead to major roof damage. You can also avoid problems by keeping your gutters clear.
- Proper Installation: If your roofing contractor cuts corners or uses inexperienced workers, you may have major issues. Common problems include issues with roof ventilation and shingle attachment that will shorten your roof’s life.
What styles and colors are available in Owens Corning shingles?
Owens Corning offers a wide variety of styles and colors. You’ll even find shingles that look like slate roofing or wood shake tiles. This extensive range lets you choose shingles that perfectly match your home’s exterior. If you are thinking about an Owens Corning complete roof replacement for your Long Island home, give County Roofing Systems a call.
We can provide you with samples of the different Owens Corning roof options. And because we also do siding and exteriors work, we can advise you on the best roof and siding color combinations.
Do Owens Corning shingles stand up to bad weather?
Owens Corning Duration and Duration Designer shingles are rated Class 3 for impact resistance. They are also designed to withstand winds of up to 110 MPH. When properly installed, they can handle anything up to a CAT 2 hurricane.
For extra protection, check out the Duration FLEX line, which can be installed for up to 130 MPH wind resistance.
What is SureNail technology?
- Enhanced Wind Resistance: The reinforced nailing strip ensures that the shingles are securely fastened, providing superior resistance to wind uplift. This makes the shingles capable of withstanding high wind speeds, ensuring that they stay in place during severe weather conditions.
- Improved Installation: The woven fabric strip provides a clear, reinforced nailing zone, which helps installers achieve precise and consistent nailing. This not only speeds up the installation process but also reduces the likelihood of errors that could compromise the roof’s integrity.
- Durability and Longevity: By enhancing the shingle’s fastening strength, SureNail Technology helps prevent blow-offs and shingle damage, contributing to the overall longevity and durability of the roof. This technology is particularly beneficial in regions like Long Island which are prone to extreme weather.
