First, flat roofs are not precisely “flat” but are instead built with a gentle slope. This slope (pitch) of 1 inch per foot or so facilitates the runoff of rain and snow melt. Without that pitch, water will pool up on your roof and, over time, cause leaks and structural damage.
For further protection, flat roofers use single-ply membranes like EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) or TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin). These membranes produce strong, leak-resistant seals on your roof. They also expand and contract with temperature changes without cracking.
