When replacing your existing roof with GAF Timberline shingles, it’s important to use the right combination of GAF starter strips, underlayment, and ridge caps for optimal performance and to meet warranty requirements.
Timberline shingles work best when installed with this combination of products, which enhances wind resistance and aesthetic appeal. Hiring a GAF Master Elite Contractor provides a 50-year non-prorated warranty on materials and a 25-year no-leak workmanship warranty, while installing the shingles yourself or with a non-certified contractor limits the warranty to 10 years with no workmanship coverage. Your contractor must install your GAF Timberline roof properly to ensure a durable, weather-resistant, and attractive roof. Here is a general overview of the installation process:
1. Preparation and Inspection
We inspect your existing roof for damage or other issues. Among the things we look for are roof deck rot or structural damage. We also check for attic moisture and heat issues, as these can affect the durability and performance of your roofing system.
If there are no problems, we move on to removing old shingles, nails, and debris from your roof surface. This ensures a clean, smooth base for your new Timberline shingles.
2. Installation of Roof Deck Protection
After we have stripped off your old roof, we apply a leak barrier to shield the roof deck from water. Installing this protective barrier is crucial to protect the deck from moisture infiltration and water damage, which can compromise the roof’s integrity. Then we lay down another layer of protection, an underlayment.
The underlayment adds an extra layer of protection against water infiltration and creates a smooth surface for your shingles, further safeguarding the roof deck from moisture.
3. Install Starter Strips
Starter strip shingles provide your roof with its first row of sealant. We install starter strip shingles along the eaves and rakes of the roof to prevent wind uplift and water infiltration. Starter strips are essential because they help guard against shingle blow-offs by improving wind resistance at the roof’s edges.
The starter strips also provide the straight row which will serve as a guide for the shingle installation.
4. Shingle Installation
We start at the bottom edge of the roof and work upward, ensuring that each row of shingles overlaps the previous one. GAF Timberline shingles are engineered for optimal installation, durability, and wind resistance.

5. Valleys and Roof Penetrations
