How We Install a GAF Timberline Roof

Your contractor must install your GAF Timberline roof properly to ensure a durable, weather-resistant, and attractive roof. Here is a general overview of the installation process:

1. Preparation and Inspection

We inspect your existing roof for damage or other issues. Among the things we look for are roof deck rot or structural damage. If there are no problems, we move on to removing old shingles, nails, and debris from your roof surface. This ensures a clean, smooth base for your new Timberline shingles.

2. Installation of Roof Deck Protection

After we have stripped off your old roof, we apply a leak barrier to shield the roof deck from water. Then we lay down another layer of protection, an underlayment. The underlayment adds an extra layer of protection against water infiltration and creates a smooth surface for your shingles.

3. Install Starter Strips

Starter strip shingles provide your roof with its first row of sealant. We install starter strip shingles along the eaves and rakes of the roof to prevent wind uplift and water infiltration. The starter strips also provide the straight row which will serve as a guide for the shingle installation.

4. Shingle Installation

We start at the bottom edge of the roof and work upward, ensuring that each row of shingles overlaps the previous one. The StrikeZone nailing area on Timberline shingles helps ensure optimal nail placement, which improves wind resistance and durability.

5. Valleys and Roof Penetrations

Thin metal strips (flashing) help seal off your roof against leaks and ensure proper water runoff. We apply flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights to prevent water infiltration.

6. Ridge Cap Shingles

We install ridge cap shingles at the roof’s peak. This protects the ridge from water infiltration and provides a finished look to the roof. We also ensure proper attic ventilation by installing ridge vents where required. Ventilation extends the life of your roof by preventing heat and moisture buildup.

7. Final Inspection and Cleanup

After we finish, we conduct a thorough inspection. This gives us a chance to fix any exposed nails, potential leak points, or improperly installed shingles.

Finally, we remove any remaining debris from the jobsite and surrounding area. You can now enjoy your brand new GAF Timberline roof.
