A Dix Hills Roofing Contractor Examines the John Coltrane House's Roof

A Legendary Roof Transformation

Unrivaled Craftsmanship for Dix Hills Homes

SERVING LONG ISLAND AND NY FOR 35 YEARS

We Have A Love Supreme for Dix Hills

When we’re not busy being your trusted Dix Hills roofing contractor, we love listening to jazz.  If you were just driving through Dix Hills, you might think it was just another quiet Long Island neighborhood. And it is, but like many quiet Long Island neighborhoods, Dix Hills has had its brush with legends.

In 1964 John Coltrane, his wife Alice, and their four children moved into a modest ranch house in Dix Hills. There Coltrane wrote a number of classic songs, including the album A Love Supreme. We’ve worked on many roofing projects for Long Island midcentury houses like the Coltrane Home.

These older homes are showing their age after several decades of Long Island’s harsh weather conditions. New roofing installations not only save homeowners money on utility bills, they also free you from the headache of constant roof leaks.

Read on to see how dedicated jazz fans saved this historical midcentury house from destruction, and learn how a new asphalt shingle roof could save you money on your new home.

The John and Alice Coltrane Home

247 Candlewood Path, Dix Hills, NY 11746

When John and Alice Coltrane bought their Dix Hills ranch home, new tract housing was springing up all across Long Island.

Many Long Island housing developments kept out Black families. But Dix Hills and surrounding areas like Wyndanch were integrated by the 1950s. The Coltranes had no difficulty purchasing a home for their growing family, and one with an upstairs bedroom for rehearsal and a basement for recording.

Only a few years after the Coltranes moved to Dix Hills, tragedy struck. On July 17, 1967, John Coltrane died of liver failure. A grief-stricken Alice stayed in the home with her family until 1972 and recorded several classic albums of her own. But in 1972 the Coltranes left Long Island and relocated to California.

After their departure, a series of owners came and went. Each owner deferred maintenance, and the Coltrane Home grew increasingly decrepit. For several years the Coltrane Home was abandoned. By 2002 the Coltrane Home had seen better days. Much of the interior had rotted and the brick exterior was crumbling.

Developers could make more money tearing down the old wreck and replacing it with a more fashionable modern home. Like many other Long Island midcentury homes, it wound up on the chopping block and was scheduled for demolition. Thanks to the efforts of many jazz fans, historians, and musicians, 247 Candlewood Path was saved.

But buying the old Coltrane Home was only the first job these fans faced. Now the Friends of the Coltrane Home were faced with the task of restoring it.

A Dix Hills Roofing Contractor's View
of The Coltrane Home Roof

Before

This picture of the John Coltrane Home was taken in August, 2009, not long after the Friends of the John and Alice Coltrane Home acquired the place. Looking at this picture as a roofer in Dix Hills, NY, I can see that they had their work cut out for them. There are several signs of serious roof damage in this photo.

Bad Patching

I see several shingle patches that a roofer applied to cover leaks and damaged shingles. The work isn’t just unsightly. It shows that they plugged up immediate problems while ignoring other serious issues. When you see this kind of slipshod work on a roofing project, you know that you’re going to discover many more installation errors and shortcuts.

Lifted Shingles

When we look at the edge of the roof, we see that many shingles have lifted. The starter shingles which held them down have fallen off. Without those shingles wind and rain can blow under the asphalt shingles with every squall and nor’easter. If left neglected too long, this windblown rain can damage the roof deck. This is why we caution against putting off needed roofing repairs. A little problem can soon become an enormous and costly issue.

Rotted Roof Deck

As we can see from this photo, that’s exactly what happened here. The gentle curves you see on the roof are signs of roof deck rot. The waterlogged boards holding the shingles and other roofing materials sag under the roof’s weight. Years of neglect have damaged the roof’s integrity beyond repair.

The Coltrane House was built in 1952, so by 2009 roof repair was no longer enough to keep things in order. We offer a 50-year warranty on our work, but we’ll also tell you that every roof has an limited lifespan. If your roof is getting on in years, it may be time for a complete new roof installation.

After

County Roofing Systems is proud of the roof replacement we did on the John Coltrane House at 247 Candlewood Path, Dix Hills, NY 11746.

This photo was taken in 2022, after the full roof restoration was completed. You can see how much better the roof looks in this photo.

The shingles look great, as do the gutters, fascia, and soffits. This is a home fit to honor the greatest tenor saxophone player of all time.

The Friends of the John Coltrane Home have done a great job of bringing this once-crumbling home back to life.

Roofing Considerations Specific to Dix Hills Homeowners

Wooded Lots and Shade-Driven Algae Growth

Dix Hills’ defining characteristic- the mature, heavily wooded lots that give the community its character- is also one of the most consistent roofing challenges in the area. Properties throughout the neighborhood carry significant tree canopy over the roof, which creates sustained shade conditions that keep shingles damp long after rain events.

Extended moisture exposure creates exactly the environment algae and moss need to establish and spread across roof surfaces. Both degrade granule adhesion over time and accelerate shingle aging.

For Dix Hills homes with meaningful tree coverage (which is most of them), GAF Timberline shingles with StainGuard Plus algae-resistant granules are a consistent recommendation. The performance difference over standard products is measurable over the life of the roof in this environment.

Aging Mid-Century Homes and Deck Conditions

Dix Hills’ earliest housing stock dates to the 1950s, and homes built in that era carry the characteristic roofing profile of their age: original board sheathing in many cases, at least one prior re-roofing cycle, and deck conditions at tear-off that depend heavily on how much water intrusion the home has experienced over its lifetime.

Full tear-off down to bare wood is the only way to assess deck condition accurately before a new system goes down. We inspect every section, document every finding, and replace compromised sheathing before any new material is installed. It’s the only approach that gives the new roof its full service life.

Complex Rooflines on Custom and Larger Properties

Dix Hills’ higher proportion of custom and large-scale homes means multi-plane rooflines with dormers, multiple valleys, and elaborate chimney configurations are common throughout the area. Every transition point on a complex roofline — dormer intersections, chimney counter-flashing, valley details — is a potential water entry point if the flashing isn’t executed correctly.

These are the details that determine whether a roof performs for 30 years or develops problems in five. We approach every flashing intersection with the same precision as the field installation, regardless of how visible or accessible it is.

Town of Huntington Building Department

All roofing work in Dix Hills falls under the Town of Huntington Building Department’s jurisdiction. Permits are required for replacement and certain repair scopes, and inspections must be completed before the project is closed.

County Roofing manages all permit filings and inspections on every project from start to finish.

Equally impressive, Keith was completely transparent about costs and timelines, and his quote was the most competitive we received by a mile.

Dix Hills Roofing FAQs

How long does a typical roof replacement take in Dix Hills, and what should I expect during the installation process?

Most residential roof replacements in Dix Hills take 2 to 5 days depending on your home’s size and complexity. We protect your property, remove old materials, inspect and repair the deck, install underlayment and ice shield, and lay your new shingles.

You can stay home throughout the process—the work is noisy but we maintain access and minimize disruption. Weather sometimes extends timelines, but our 35+ years serving Suffolk County means we know how to plan around Long Island’s nor’easters and summer storms while never compromising quality.

You typically need repairs if you have minor localized damage, a few missing shingles, or a roof under 15 years old. You need replacement if your roof is 20+ years old, shows widespread damage (curling, cracking, granule loss), has a sagging deck, multiple leaks, or visible daylight through the attic.

Many Dix Hills homes from the 1950s-70s are approaching replacement time. Our free inspection provides an honest assessment—we’ll never push unnecessary work because our reputation over 35+ years depends on integrity.

We install premium asphalt architectural shingles from GAF, CertainTeed, and Owens Corning—engineered specifically for Long Island’s humid summers, harsh nor’easters, heavy snow, and freeze-thaw cycles.

GAF Timberline HDZ offers exceptional wind resistance and algae protection, CertainTeed Landmark provides superior impact resistance with 25-year algae warranty, and Owens Corning Duration delivers outstanding durability with SureNail Technology.

As a certified Master Craftsman contractor, we qualify you for enhanced warranties including our industry-leading 25-year labor warranty combined with 50-year material warranties—protection unavailable through uncertified contractors.

Insurance typically covers storm damage from wind, hail, or falling trees, but won’t cover normal wear and tear or deferred maintenance.

County Roofing Systems provides comprehensive inspections with detailed documentation, works directly with your adjuster during inspections, and provides detailed estimates that help ensure fair compensation. Our 35+ years working with every major insurance carrier means we know exactly what documentation adjusters require to support your claim.

If damage isn’t covered or you’re replacing an aging roof, we offer financing options for qualified homeowners through local lenders who understand Long Island property values.

Yes. County Roofing manages all permit filings and inspections with the Town of Huntington Building Department on every project. We handle everything from start to finish.

Homes of that era commonly have original board sheathing, and its condition depends heavily on the home’s moisture history and how many re-roofing cycles it’s been through. We inspect every inch of the exposed deck, document every finding, and get your sign-off before proceeding with any deck repairs. Nothing gets covered back up until we’ve assessed it together.

We offer financing with approvals as low as 0% interest, up to 15-year terms, with monthly payments starting at $149. Quick approval, no income check required. Ask about current offers when you call for your estimate.
