Residential flat roofs in Long Island need the best roofing materials. The maritime climate and heavy snowfalls make it challenging to protect your home from water damage. And Firestone is a name roofing contractors trust for all their roof projects.

Firestone Roofing Products recently changed their name to Elevate. Old-timers in the industry still call it Firestone. I’ve been working with Firestone products for over 35 years. I’ve applied Firestone roof membranes to residential and commercial roofs across Long Island and the NYC metro area.

Whether your home needs flat roof repair or a new EPDM or TPO roof installation, County Roofing Systems can help. Our team of Long Island flat roof specialists can give your home a beautiful, energy-efficient Elevate roof. We install flat roofs that can stand up to Long Island’s worst weather, and we get the work done on time, to code, and within budget.

When Did Firestone Change Its Name?

In June 2022 the Holcim Group, one of the world’s largest building materials manufacturers, purchased Firestone Building Products. While Holcim has changed the name to Elevate Roofing Products, it remains committed to durability and performance.

Holcim has continued Firestone’s commitment to excellence and has a special interest in sustainable, eco-friendly roofing solutions. Its innovative approach to modern building standards make it a reliable option for Long Island homeowners.

A Brief Guide to Elevate Roofing Products

EPDM Roofing

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a type of synthetic rubber widely used in roofing due to its exceptional durability and flexibility. Roofers commonly use EPDM as a single-ply membrane. Its robust performance in various environmental conditions makes it an ideal choice for both residential and commercial flat roofs

In 1980 Firestone introduced RubberGard™, the industry’s premium-grade EPDM roofing membrane. Today many EPDM installations rely on RubberGard for its durability, flexibility, and UV resistance. Elevate continues to produce several varieties of RubberGard. It also offers adhesives, sealants, flashing strips and splice tape for EPDM roofs.

TPO Roofing

Flat roofers use thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) for its excellent resistance to UV rays, ozone, and chemical exposure. TPO single ply roofing membranes come in large sheets that are heat-welded at the seams. This creates a continuous, leak-resistant water barrier. TPO’s reflective properties also reduce heat absorption and keep your residential flat roof building cooler in summer.

For over 20 years commercial building owners have relied on Firestone UltraPly™ TPO systems. Today contractors installing TPO rely on Elevate to provide the most durable TPO membranes in the business.

Roofing Insulation

Roofing insulation does more than just keep your home’s temperature regulated. On a conventional sloped roof, water runs down to the gutters and downspout. Roof insulation boards are gently tapered to produce a 1″ per foot slope. This helps prevent puddling that could damage your roof decking and cause leaks in your home.

Elevate continues to produce Polyiso (polyisocyanurate) boards that provide maximum insulation along with the highest standards of fire resistance. You’ll find roof insulation to meet the needs of any residential flat roof.

Asphalt Flat Roofing

Asphalt flat roofs are affordable, durable, highly waterproof, and easy to install. They also offer excellent fire resistance and require little long-term maintenance. Owners can use asphalt flat roofs for roof decks and rooftop gardens.

We’ve installed many residential and commercial flat roofs using Firestone and Elevate asphalt roofing products. Our team installs SBS flat roofs, APP flat roofs, built-up roofs (BUR), and hybrid flat roofs. We can repair your bitumen flat roof or strip your current roof down to the roof decking and install a new asphalt flat roof.

How We Install a Residential Flat Roof

1.  Inspection

We examine your existing roof to determine what must be removed. If your roof is is good shape, we might add another layer to extend its lifespan. But if your flat roof has serious issues or is more than 20 years old, we will need to do a full flat roof replacement.

2. Removal

To start a new installation, we strip away the old roofing materials. If necessary, we replace rotting or warped roof deck boards. We also check to make sure your framing can handle the weight of your new roof and install any necessary additional joists and beans.

3. Insulation

After we have stripped off your old roof, we apply a leak barrier to shield the roof deck from water. Then we lay down another layer of protection, an underlayment. The underlayment adds an extra layer of protection against water infiltration and creates a smooth surface for your shingles.

4. Waterproofing

If we are doing an asphalt flat roof, we apply layers of bitumen tar and felt to seal the roof against water. For EPDM or TPO roofs, we waterproof by laying out rubber membrane and attaching it with a water-based adhesive.

5. Flashing

Thin metal strips (flashing) help seal off your roof against leaks and ensure proper water runoff. We apply flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights to prevent water infiltration.

6. Final Inspection

Before we call the job complete, we inspect the job site thoroughly. We make sure there are no gaps, loose materials, or any other potential issues. When we leave, we know that the roof is fully watertight and ready to withstand Long Island’s worst weather.

7. Maintenance

Flat roofs require regular maintenance to ensure their longevity. You will need to keep the drains clear of debris to avoid puddling. You will also need annual checkups to catch any minor damage before it becomes a major problem.
