Vinyl siding started a revolution in American homes. Vinyl is less expensive and more durable than metal or wood siding, and provides better insulation as well. Vinyl siding helped fuel postwar America’s explosive housing growth.

Today vinyl remains a popular building material choice with Long Island and NYC homeowners. And thanks to today’s technology, vinyl is more durable, UV-resistant, and long-lasting than ever. We’ve been a Long Island vinyl siding contractor for over 35 year, so we’ve seen these advancements firsthand. Come along with County Roofing Systems on a quick tour through vinyl siding history.

THE HISTORY OF VINYL SIDING

In the late 1950s Crane Plastics created vinyl siding panels as an alternative to aluminum siding. At first the manufacturing process made quality control difficult. Workers had to mix the colors manually for each batch, which led to consistency issues.

VINYL SIDING TODAY

By the 1970s siding companies had mastered these manufacturing problems. Vinyl siding became a top choice for contractors building middle-class and affordable housing. But today vinyl is not just the siding material of the masses.

Modern vinyl siding can mimic the look of wood shake siding or other high end materials. Today you’ll find vinyl siding on many of Long Island’s finest homes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vinyl Siding

How many years should vinyl siding last?

Modern vinyl siding should last 30 to 50 years after installation. Since the 2000s siding manufacturers have made great advances in UV resistance and vinyl durability. If your siding was installed before then, consider siding replacement.

What are the alternatives to vinyl siding?

The most popular alternative to vinyl siding is fiber cement siding. Fiber cement planks are thicker and look more like wood, which many people find more attractive. But fiber cement planks are heavier and require specialized tools and training for installation.

How often do I need to paint vinyl siding?

Painting vinyl siding is a short-term solution to the problem. Paint cracks, fades, and does little to protect your siding from the elements. We recommend a complete siding installation. Modern vinyl siding will retain its vibrant colors for decades and offers better insulation.

Why did my utility bills go up after I installed vinyl siding?

Many siding installation contractors who offer low bids use the cheapest available materials. Often they affix your siding to a rigid foam board that offers no insulation value whatsoever. At County Roofing Systems, we use insulated form board that saves you money on heating and cooling bills.
